Dear Friends,
I was sad to hear the Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn had died. The ChristianityToday magizine
has a great article on his life by Chuck Colson. He accurately compares
Solzhenitsyn to the prophet Jeremiah. Colson uses Solzhenitsyn's
Harvard commencment speech as his bases. That speech shocked the
intellectual community for its pro-religous perspective and its
questioning of unlimited freedom. Tragically, few people have taken his
words and made any changes in their life. The message of the prophet
Jeremiah was also rejected by his generation.
This week's sermon is about Peter walking on the water. Christan Bruce does an excellent job of comparing the movie, The Truman Story, to the Biblical event. Beverly Gavanta
has a good article that uses the story to understand our fears. Both
articles would be good introductions to this Sunday's sermon.
Recently a group of Koreans gathered in Wheaton for a conference on missions. It was their 6th conference and drew 5,000 people from over 80 countries. Their first was 20 years ago. Korea now sends out 18,000 missionaries to 168 countriesmaking it the second largest missionary-sending country in the world. At
the concluding service the group was urged to set a goal of 100,000
missionaries by 2030. I believe they will accomplish that goal. By
comparison, the number of missionaries that the PCUSA sends out has
been steadily declining. Ironically, the Korean church is indebted to Sam and Eileen Moffet, two Presbyterian missionaries who open the doors to Korea.
